Define anxiety and explain how state anxiety can affect sports performance.

Anxiety is a negative emotional state that determines the level of worry or nervousness an individual experiences. There are two forms of anxiety: trait anxiety, where anxiety is part of individual's personality and it does not change with the situation they are in, and state anxiety, where the individual experiences anxiety in certain situations. For example, England's Ben Stokes was asked to bowl the final over of 2016 T20 Cricket World Cup final. Stokes conceded 25 runs in the over, Carlos Brathwaite hit four sixes successively, resulting in England's loss. Previously, in the final over of the Semi-Final against New Zealand, Stokes conceded 3 runs and took 2 wickets. This explains that Stokes was anxious in the final match only.
