What is ATP? Explain the process of ATP hydrolysis and production of energy

ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is a high energy compound stored in the body. The role of ATP is to store energy for metabolic reactions. There are limited supplies of ATP within the body and these supplies are stored within the muscles. Its the only usable source of energy in the body and is a simple compound that is quickly broken down. When ATP is broken down it is called ATP hydrolysis and is catalyzed by the enzyme ATP hydrolase. In this process ATP is broken down by ATP hydrolase into ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and Pi (inorganic phosphate) and releases energy which can be used for muscle contraction.
