Analyse two reasons why some pupils join pupil subculture (10 Marks)

ONE POINT: 5 MARKS POINT (P): One explanation as to why pupils may join a subculture is a result of labelling. EXPLANATION (E) : Labelling is where teachers routinely judge and classify pupils e.g 'bright' or 'slow' and this can have a direct effect on the mindset of a student, leading them to form a pupil subculture.EXAMPLE (E2): For example, Lacey found that there are two different subculture responses that student have formed as a result of labelling. One of which is the anti-school subculture. Such students feel as though he school has undermined their self-worth by placing them in low ability groups. Thus, they seek alternative ways to gain status which usually involves inverting school rules. E.g. truanting, not doing work, challenging teacher’s authority etc.LINK (L) : Such an example further demonstrates how labelling can lead some students to join pupil subcultures.
