What is personification in poetry?

Personification is when writers give human characteristics to anything that is non-human. For example, objects, ideas, or animals. This can have a powerful descriptive effect for the reader. For example 'the wind was howling'. An example from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee it is written 'The fire... had eaten its way to the roof'
