Explore the theme of betrayal in Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls'.

'An Inspector Calls' discovers many aspects of betrayal, stemming from both the treatment of Eva Smith by Gerald and the Birlings, and the dinner party guests' betrayal of one another. As an example of these two forms of betrayal, Gerald builds up Eva's trust in him by having an affair and treating her with the first presentation of kindness given by the Birlings, before taking it away from her and setting up her demise which would lead to her meeting of Eric. Gerald also betrays Sheila by having the affair with Eva/Daisy, which is an evident display of betrayal.As a less blatant example of betrayal, the class divide exemplified by the discrimination faced by Eva Smith demonstrates the betrayal of the poor by the rich. It might be argued that 'there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths' showcases Eva's representation of the working class in the face of discrimination and betrayal by the rich, as Mr Birling does to Eva by firing her.
