2017 higher, section A, part A, question 1: Look at lines 1–20. By referring to at least two examples, analyse how dialogue is used to reveal the attitudes of the slab boys (Phil and Spanky) to Hector’s situation at this point.

The candidate should note that when the question says 'at least two' this is the bare minimum and that three points are preferable. The candidate would continue to make their answer something similar as to what follows; Dialogue has made it evident that Phil and Spanky's initial attitude, before finding out the reality of Hector's situation and that he was promoted, is that of sympathy. This is made obvious as they try to give Hector a 'presentation' of 'one quid'. This symbolises that the pair feel sorry for Hector as they are trying to aid Hector with, what they believe , financial struggles , therefore making it evident that their initial attitude towards Hector's situation is that of sympathy. Also, it is worth noting that they call their financial aid a 'presentation' implies that they went through a great deal of trouble to acquire their financial aide, therefore further making it obvious that dialogue implies a sympathetic attitude. However, dialogue makes it evident there is still an element of ridicule in their dynamic, as when Spanky is trying to give Hector their 'presentation' he says 'Doesn't make it easy, does he?' implying that although they are sympathetic towards Hector's situation, helping him is still a difficult task, as the pair still perceive him as inferior to them, therefore making it evident that a hint of their old dynamic is still present.
