Examine the works of a composer, and how they convey extra musical content through the score.

Claude Michel Schoenberg is a musical theatre composer having written well known musicals such as Les Miserables and Miss Saigon. He often conveys extra musical content within the score which is able to reflect the mood on stage. A prime example of this is within the number 'I dreamed a dream' from Les Miserables. Main character Fantine is singing about hoping for a better life and this hopeful mood is effectively reflected in the score through his use of tonality and melodic contour. When Fantine sings the word 'shame' there is a rising melodic contour which signifies the longing for a better life and the hope for a new day. This is followed by a bright, unexpected tertiary modulation to G major which contributes to the bright/hopeful mood. Schoenberg also uses orchestration/instrumentation in order to convey extra musical content such as the comedic trombone slides in 'Master of the House' and the use of native asian percussion instruments such as the bells in 'I'd Give my Life for you' from the Asian musical, Miss Saigon.
