I will begin by addressing a common worry about public funding of the arts. Many people regard it as a high-brow luxury that does not require government spending. Their argument supports that government should dedicate resources to matters such as public health. However, this is a narrow argument that focuses only on short-term urgencies. The government need also to remain attentive to long-term goals. For example, public funding of the arts preserves the abundance of opportunity that humans can access to develop their abilities.Imagine if Broadway became a dying art. This would create a failure in the market as many would loose their jobs and the public would be stumped from spectating and admiring their work. Although not as urgent as public healthcare, the arts are still a valid sector in need of funding. The government should be planning for the future as well as the present.
