Evaluate Aschs research (5 marks)

Upon further research conducted, Aschs research is shown to be a child of its time as a pose to an innate human behaviour. Aschs research was repeated in 1980 by Perrin and Spencer where they found that only 1/396 of the participants conformed, where Asch found 36.8% rate of conformity. This suggests that the research conducted does not carry well throughout time, and possibly different types of societies as when Asch research was conducted it was an especially conformist time in the USA, making conforming more of a social norm.Another limitation is the low internal validity of Aschs research. This is due to demand characteristics being created, as the study was conducted in a lab and not real life, where as the participants believe it would be best to conform, or conversely the 'screw you' effect where upon finding out the true purpose of the study they intentionally didn't conform. This limits the amount that Aschs research can be applied to real life and everyday scenarios.
