What is food security?

Food security is a measure of someone's access to safe and nutritious food. Good food security implies that an individual has a sustainable supply of food available to them that will allow them to lead a healthy lifestyle. There may be high quality food available, but the individual might not have to money to buy it. An example of this is in Madagascar. High quality rice is grown but it is exported for profit. Most of the locals only have access to low quality rice, of lower nutritional value. This means that they don't have as good food security as indicated by crop types. Other factors such as wealth, location (e.g. inaccessible regions), instability of market prices and vulnerability (such as gender inequalities or personal disabilities) can influence food security.
