Describe the types of waves that are released during an earthquake.

There are 4 types of waves released during an earthquake. The first type of wave is p waves, they arrive to the surface first. They are longitudinal waves and are able to travel through solid ground. The second type of wave is s waves which is a transverse wave which can also travle throuhg solid ground. These are more dangerous than p waves, as they have a greater amplitude. The third type of wave released during an earthquake is love waves, which are known as surface waves. Finally Rayleigh waves arrive after P and S waves, and can only occur on the ground surface. They are rotational, causing vertical and horizontal ground motion. They travel slower so interact longer with buildings thus causing the most damage.
