In reference to the oikos, to what extent was the role of the father the most important?

The role of the father in the household was extremely important, he would have been very well respected and in charge of the house. In addition, he would be the only one to work for the family, therefore providing the income for the basic household upkeep. They would reside in the Andron and often held a symposium (a drinking party) to show off their wealth. The father would also raise the son to be a strong individual and prepare him to take on the roles of an Athenian man. However, the role of the mother could also be seen as relatively important. The mother would prepare and make food for the family, oftentimes be found in the 'loom- room' spinning thread and weaving cloth. She was also in charge of the slaves, ordering them what to do and taking care of them. She would not have been greatly respected or rewarded for completing these tasks despite the fact they are all essential for the running of the oikos.
