When do I use the "passato remoto"?

The passato remoto is not a very common tense in the italian language. It is only really used when referring to something in the historical past, without much relevance to the now. This means that it is commonly used in fairytales or stories set many years ago, or to talk about people who are no longer alive. For example, Dante nacque nel 1265.
