What features can be found at the mouth of a river?

1) As the river reaches the mouth, it has a large discharge and he river channel is deep and wide. The valley is now wide and flat. This creates a wide floodplain around the river.

2) A floodplain is a flat area around a river that regularly floods. Each time a river floods, silt (alluvium) is deposited on the floodplain. This mkakes it very fertile and good for farming and agriculture. Floodplains are often highly populated, particularly in LEDCs (i.e. developing countries), where farming employs many people.

3) Deltas are a feature found at the mouth of large rivers, e.g. the Ganges Delta. When a river enters the sea it deposits its load; if this occurs faster than the sea can remove the mateiral, a delta may form. Over time it becomes a permanent land feature, which is rich in alluvium and provides fertile farmland.
