What was the impact of Augustus on Ancient Rome?

In the short-term Augustus ended the period of civil war that had plagued Rome for the past 30 years. In the long-term as the first emperor he established an imperial dynasty that would stretch across hundreds of years to the fall of Rome in the 5th century AD.
