What is the difference between diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound?

DIEGETIC SOUNDThis is sound that is inside the world of the media text. It is 'real' sounds that are occuring inside the 'real' world of the media text. Examples of this would be cars driving past in a scene featured on the road.NON-DIEGETIC SOUNDThis is sound that is added in on top of the media text. It is 'non-real' sound that occurs outside of the 'real' world of the media text. An example of this is the external music not featured in the world of the text that is added in during the editing process.
