What is an effective essay structure for philosophy essays? (edexcel)

Part 1 asks you to explain a certain theory or argument. The key word here is 'explain'. This means you should not add any evaluative comments that show your opinion- save that for Part 2.

It is important to set the essay out clearly with an introduction and subsequent paragraphs each explaining a feature of the theory. NB The terminology used depends on the question- if it asks for feature say feature, strength specify strength etc.

Part 2 is the evaluative section and you are marked based on your ability to critically analyse the theory at hand. Make use of key scholars and critics to demonstrate wider knowledge. Yet, it is also encouraged to have some unique points that show your own opinion. It should also finish with a conclusion.
