What is a limitation of research into cultural variations in attachment?

A significant limitation of attachment research in different cultures is imposed etic- where Western tools are used to measure psychological responses in non-Western countries; this is a problem because there are differences in beliefs. For example, there may be differences in what each culture may define as a 'secure' attachment, as different values may be encouraged. An emic approach should be taken- where tools are developed within the culture being studied, as this would give a more accurate measure of attachment types.
