Medicine is a rapidly changing field which requires an acknowledgment of life-long learning. During my studies of GCSE and A levels for chemistry and biology , my competence for scientific thinking has improved and has tied in with my ambitions and motivations to be a Doctor. This has broadened my method of approach to learning and has allowed me to use multiple ways in different situations to solidify my knowledge and understanding. This has proved extremely effective as it has enabled me to secure a place in a Russel group Medical School. One of these ways was realising that one of the best methods to test and improve my learning was to embrace teaching as a form of revision including teaching my peers various parts of the specification. This enhanced my appreciation for teaching and gave me the courage to become a tutor. Each individual is different, so in order to ensure the students I tutor can achieve their best, it is important for me to implement multiple methods of teaching as well as ways of revising. This will provide the students with a more personal way of teaching compared to something they may receive at school which may not be as tailored to their way of thinking and learning. Some methods includes mini-quizzing, simplified diagrams, question and process walkthroughs, and a balance of small visual, verbal , and audible cues which can make a huge difference to learning. Learning needs to be active and intuitive, so a variety of ways to learn is imperative.
I appreciate that different students are at different stages of their learning and some pupils may require more explanation of key ideas and knowledge but would easily transfer that into exam questions, whereas some benefit more from further solidifying their competence of content using exam practice. Therefore, I value being adaptable in my teaching methods implementing techniques such as , using simplified diagrams and analogies to explain key ideas, use of mini quizzing during teaching to...
I appreciate that different students are at different stages of their learning and some pupils may require more explanation of key ideas and knowledge but would easily transfer that into exam questions, whereas some benefit more from further solidifying their competence of content using exam practice. Therefore, I value being adaptable in my teaching methods implementing techniques such as , using simplified diagrams and analogies to explain key ideas, use of mini quizzing during teaching to establish concepts and most importantly emphasising the importance of exam technique/practice as ultimately students are measured in their exams based on that. Furthermore these techniques allow me to consistently assess each lesson, the different specific areas which the pupil lacks confidence in by using testing of information in previous lessons to promote active recall and encourage long term knowledge (ultimately learning). With over 400+ hours of tutoring experiences, I ensure my sources are reliable in what I use for teaching as they are updated to match the current curriculums and carry the same key information within the subject which I myself used to achieve very respectable results. However, I am aware of the significance of the responsibility that I as the tutor have to deliver those recourses in a manner which is patient and positively encourages the growth of the student's learning to ultimately work together to achieve a collective goal.
We only take tutor applications from candidates who are studying at the UK’s leading universities. Candidates who fulfil our grade criteria then pass to the interview stage, where a member of the MyTutor team will personally assess them for subject knowledge, communication skills and general tutoring approach. About 1 in 8 becomes a tutor on our site.
