For regular verbs which have 'avoir' as their auxiliary verb, how would you form the perfect past tense? (for er, re and ir verbs)
- Take the present tense of the auxiliary (avoir)
- Form the past participle for the verb by removing the ‘er’, ‘re’, and ‘ir’ and then…
- For:
- ‘ir’ verbs add ‘i’
- ‘er’ verbs add ‘é’
- ‘re’ verbs add ‘u’
- Do, however, be aware of the irregular verbs which you will have to learn the past participle of.
- For example, with ‘I have eaten’:
- J’ai
- Manger --- mang --- mangé
- J’ai mangé
