How does the PDO (preceding direct object) rule work?

The past participle of the passé composé will reflect the gender and number of the preceding direct object. It is important to remember that it does not occur on the INdirect object.

For example,

La femme que j'ai vue était belle. Les vrais paradis sont les paradis qu'on a perdus.

But not with:

J'ai vu une belle femme.
