How do I write a top scoring essay?

There are 5 key criteria in the marking scheme for you to pay attention to but the first and most important step is to get into the literature. You need to demonstrate thorough reading and genuine interest with the material. Evidence of engagement goes a long way and is something I am keen to help students with. When it comes to the formal criteria, there are 5 questions to ask yourself as you are writing:

  1. Am I showing off what I know about the text?
  2. Am I answering the demands of the question?
  3. Am I drawing out stylistic features
  4. Have I planned the structure of this essay thoughtfully and effectively? (including topic sentences, a strong thesis and overall coherence)
  5. Have I checked and rechecked my grammar and spelling?
