What is free indirect discourse?

Free indirect discourse sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is - it refers to a style of third person narration that steals aspects of first person narration. Basically, the narrator is an omnipotent being, who can enter the consciousness of characters and tell us their thoughts and feelings.
