What is the difference between the independent and dependent variables.

The best way to remember the difference between independent and dependent variables is when you are conducting an experiment you are looking to see if one variable (the independent variable) has an effect on another variable (the dependent variable). So the independent variable is the thing that is manipulated by the experimenter and the dependent variable is the thing that is measured by the experimenter. For example, in an experiment investigating whether math tutoring can increase scores on standardised exams. Groups of children receive different amounts of tutoring sessions and the scores on a final test are compared. Here, the independent variable would be the amount of tutoring received and the dependent variable is the score on the final exam.
