How should I effectively set out my essay?

An essay should always begin with a clear introduction that addresses the focus and the key terms of the question; and often provides indication of what your conclusion will be. Regardless of your conclusion, a balanced essay needs to be written and both sides of the argument should be addressed within your essay. The argument and corresponding structure doesn’t have to be evenly split, but the essay certainly shouldn’t focus solely on one argument throughout, and it is valuable to at least address the other side of the argument, even if you are to use this to then argue against. It is invaluable in demonstrating critical understanding of all sides of the argument, thus strengthening the eventual stance you decide on. The essay should finish with a sharp conclusion regarding the question being asked. The focus needs to be on ensuring that the question being asked is the one that is being answered, and that all parts of the question are sufficiently addressed.
