The Three comparatives in Italian

The comparatives in Italians, as in English, are used to compare people or things.

The comparatives of majority and minority follow the same structure whereas the comparative of equality differs from the other two.

Comparative of majority and minority

Structure: PIÙ + ADJECTIVE + DI/CHE

Example with DI:

Luca è più alto/basso di suo padre

Luca is taller than his father

Example with CHE:

La mela è più/meno rossa che verde

The apple is more/less red than green

Comparative of equality:

Structure: ADJECTIVE + COME/QUANTO

Example with COME:

La mia casa è grande come la tua

My house is as big as yours

Example with QUANTO:

La scuola è importante quanto la famiglia

School is as important as family
