What is a redox reaction?

A redox reaction is a reaction where both reduction and oxidation are happening simultaneously.

Reduction is the gain of electrons, where as oxidation is the grian of elctrons. I like to remember this using the acronmym OILRIG:

Oxidation

Is

Loss

Reduction

Is

Gain

By considering the mechanism of the two step reaction of butanone and NaBH4 followed by dilute acid, explain why the product has no effect on plane polarised light.
