When do I need to use the subjunctive?

In Spanish, the subjunctive mood is frequently used. A useful way to remember it is by using the acronym W.E.I.R.D.O:1) Wishes- the subjunctive will normally be used when wishing, wanting, or expecting etc. something E.G. "espero que tengas una buena experiencia."2) Emotions- when expressing anger, sadness, annoyed, scared, suprised etc. E.G. "siento mucho que no puedan venir a la fiesta."3) Impersonal Expressions- most phrases consisting of es + adjective + que are followed by the subjunctive E.G. "es posible que pierda su pasaporte." 4) Recommendations and Requests- E.G. "recomiendo que leas este libro".5) Doubt- E.G. "no creo que mi padre venga".6) Ojalá- this word means I hope/I wish/if only E.G. "Ojalá no llueva". These are only the very basics of the subjunctive, but keeping W.E.I.R.D.O in mind provides great guidelines to bear in mind whilst writing or speaking in Spanish.
