How to correctly use the word "путешествовать" ( "to travel") in Russian? ( Common mistake in both the oral and the written section)

While " I travelled to France last year." is a perfectly correct sentence in English, in Russian " Я путешествовал во Францию в прошлом году."  is not correct. The word "путешествовать" is very general in  the Russian language, but can be used in sentences like: I travel around the world - Я путешествую по миру; I travel with my friends - Я путешествую с друзьями; I like travelling - Я люблю путешествовать - all very general in the context. If you want to be more specific, you need to use other verbs of motion, such as ездить/ поехать, e.g:  Я ездил во Францию в прошлом году.
