What is the difference between meiosis and mitosis?

There are a few fundamental differences between these processes. Mitosis is required for cell growth and repair and asexual reproduction. Meiosis is used in the production of gametes for sexual reproduction. During mitosis only one division occurs leading to the production of two genetically identical diploid daughter cells. In meiosis there are two divsion resulting in four haploid daughter cells which are not gentically identical. These differences occur due to crossing over during prophase 1 in which recombination can happen.
