What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative research methods?

Qualitative research methods rely on the use of elaboration to explore, in depth, a topic area. They are not restricted to responses and encourage giving the participant a voice to generate a descriptive view of the area. Quantitative research methods focus on numerical data which is quantifiable (which is an easy way to remember that these are called quantitative research methods). The responses are usually limited and look to follow scientific method to prove or disprove theories.
