Describe how to test for and identify halide ions in a solution.

First acidify the solution using dilute nitric acid, then add silver nitrate. The silver ions should react with the halide ions to form a precipitate, with colour depending on which halide ion is present:Chloride = white,Bromide = cream,Iodide = yellow, but note that fluoride ions will not form a precipitate.
