In order to add fractions, you need to make the denominator (the bottom number), the same. To do this, you need to find a common multiple of both of the denominators that you have. For example, if you have 1/4 + 2/3, your denominators are 4 and 3. The lowest multiple of these numbers is 12 (i.e., both 3 and 4 are factors of 12). So for the 1/4, you need to multiply the 1 and the 4 by 3, so that the 1 becomes 3 and the 4 becomes 12. Your new fraction is 3/12. For the 2/3, you need to multiply the 2 and the 3 by 4, so that the 2 becomes 8 and the 3 becomes 12. Your new fraction is 8/12. Now your two new fractions are 3/12 and 8/12, and your denominators are the same. You can now simply just add the numerators (3 and 8) together, to become 11/12.
