How was the Treaty of Versailles meant to prevent another war?

The Treaty of Versailles prevented another war by being severe in punishing Germany, particularly so that there would not be another attack on France by Germany. One of the most harsh aspects of the Treaty was the £6,600 million in payments that Germany had to make to the allied forces. Germany's military was reduced so that an attack on France would be limited or impossible. They were permitted only 100,000 soldiers in the army, with no conscription, and only 6 warships. The area of Alsace-Lorraine, which bordered France, was removed from German territory and German troops were no longer allowed in the Rhineland.
