What is the French subjunctive?

The subjunctive is a mood which expresses actions or ideas which have an element of doubt or subjectivity about them. Examples include emotions, will/wanting, possibility, necessity and opinions/judgements. It normally appears in dependent clauses introduced by 'qui' or 'que'.
