How should I structure my essays and why does it matter?

Structuring your essay is an often underemphasised aspect of essay writing that can easily increase your grade and make your argument stronger. By clarifying the line of your argument with clear topic sentences, you show the examiner that you have control of your material and you make it easier for yourself to construct a compelling argument. When deciding on a structure, keep in mind your topic sentences. Make sure your subordinate points are ordered in a way that indicates a clear progression, and don't underestimate the importance of a powerful introduction and conclusion. Save an interesting realisation for your conclusion! It'll make all the difference; that is what will stay in examiner's minds. Finally, make sure you have a balance of all the criteria you'll be marked on; quotes, close analysis, historical context and (depending on your essay) critics should be scattered throughout the whole essay, not all concentrated into one paragraph.
