Why is narrative perspective important?

Author’s use narrative perspective as a means of controlling the release of information to the reader. There are several different types of narrative perspective such as first person, second person, and third person and each of these enable the author to direct the release of information. Look at the framed narrative of Frankenstein for example. Here Shelley sandwiches the story of Frankenstein and his monster with another fictional story about a man reading Frankenstein’s tale. The impact of this changing point of view enables the reader to contrast the characters’ expectations of the monster to his true intellect. Walton and Frankenstein describe the monster as brutal, violent and inhuman however through Shelley’s shift in narrative perspective the reader learns that he is intellectual, lonely and human. A useful exercise to do would be to go through your text and isolate moments where the narrative perspective is imperative to the author’s plot. What has the point of view achieved? Does it impact the possible accuracy of the narration?
