What is your best advice for translation?

The main key aspect to make a good translation is having a strong and wide vocabulary, which enables you to translate the text into the destination language. Whilst it can be difficult and gaps in vocabulary are inevitable, a really good way to strengthen vocabulary is to familiarize yourself with common phrases found in newspaper style texts such, as “Según” (according to). Also, being up to date with recent world news is a great way to increase your chances of being familiar with the gist of the text and its key words.
Another top tip would be – keep it simple as possible! Many students make translation a much more strenuous and difficult job by going over the top with their translations. This can be avoided by reading ahead and planning, instead of translating word by word – so a simple reorganization of word order in a sentence can go a long way in making your translation much more coherent for the marker.
