How do I check if events are independent (in statistics / probability)?

The sentence 'event A is independent to event B' means that the probability of A does not affect the probability of event B. In mathematical terms, this can be written as:Prob(A and B) = Prob(A) x Prob(B)
So in questions that ask you to determine if events are independent, we will be given enough information in the question so that we can evaluate these probabilities and we simply just check if this definition holds. We can go through example questions like this to make sure that you understand this.

Show, by counter-example, that the statement "If cos(a) = cos(b) then sin(a) = sin(b)" is false.
