What is the conditional tense?

The conditional tense is the French way of saying I "would do something". It's an action that would happen if a certain condition occurred. So, for example, in English you might say "i would go out tonight if I wasn't ill". It's a fairly straightforward tense to conjugate if you know the present and the future tense, you basically combine the two; it's the future stem with the imperfect endings. For example, if we use the verb "manger" (to eat) and the sentence "I would eat the pizza"So we start with the subject, Je, then the future stem of "manger", which is just the infinitive of the verb, so it's still just "manger", then you would add the correct ending from the imperfect tense. In the imperfect tense the ending for "Je" is -ais, so you would add that to "manger" to make it "mangerais"- "je mangerais" and then add "le pizza" on the end.
