'To what extent was the depression the main reason why Hitler came to power in January 1933?'

(intro) The Great Depression was an important reason why Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. However, his rise to power could not have happened without other reasons. Other necessary factors were Nazi Party tactics, Hitler’s leadership, the weaknesses of the Weimar Republic, and politics in the Reichstag. The Depression was not the main reason, but was of equal importance to the other factors. The depression was an important factor in why Hitler came to power in January 1933. With over 6 million people unemployed in Germany at the time, Hitlers' anti-government message and promise of employment resonated with people. It made it possible for Hitler to win seats in the Reichstag, beginning with only 12 seats but eventually getting 230 as the effects of the depression worsened. These seats allowed Hitler more political power in the Reichstag. Therefore, the depression was a very important reason for Hitlers coming to power because it increased support for radical parties (77% voted for extreme parties in 1930).
