How do I write a good conclusion in an English Literature essay?

The conclusion of your essay is just as important as your introductory paragraph and should be planned before you begin to write the essay. Although it may be shorter than the other paragraphs within your essay, you should allow yourself plenty of time to write your conclusion - this is something to be aware of, particularly during an exam. Conclusions should lead naturally from the last paragraph of your essay and relate back both to your argument and to the essay question or title. New information should not be introduced at this stage - you shouldn't make a statement in your conclusion that has not previously been considered within the main body of the essay. Your conclusion should be concise, and re-emphasise the arguments you have been building throughout the essay. Signal to your reader that you are concluding the essay by beginning your final paragraph with a sentence that differs from the introductory sentences of the preceding paragraphs. Look back at the topic sentences of each paragraph and bring these ideas together in a brief, reflective closing paragraph.
