What are the main forms of river erosion?

There are 4 main types of river erosion processes.

1) Abrasion - this is when river bedload, such as rocks carried by the river, scrape against river banks causing banks to be eroded.

2) Attrition - when rocks carried by the river knock against each other, breaking into smaller rocks and become more rounded.

3) Hydraulic action - the shear force of water hitting river banks causes air to become trapped in cracks and fractures in the banks, weakening them causing them to become gradually eroded.

4) Solution - this is when soluble particles within the river are dissolved.
