How can I increase the sophistication of my written work in Spanish?

Written work in a foreign language may seem slightly daunting at GCSE level, but there are many ways in which you can improve the sophistication of your written work with just a few simple tips! 1) Try and include some varied opinion phrases in your work, such as 'me parece que...' (I think that), 'a mis ojos...' (in my eyes)'. These phrases will demonstrate to your teacher/examiner that you've not only got different ideas about the written topic, but also that you've acquired a wide range of vocabulary!2) Try and include as many different persons of the verb as you can. Most students have the tendency to constantly write in the first person and only state their own opinions, but it will really improve the sophistication of your written work if you are able to talk about what your friend likes, or what your parents are doing this weekend.3) Thirdly, a variety of tenses is a sure-fire way to impress your teacher/examiner. Rather than just writing in the present tense, try to talk about something that may have happened to you a while ago, using the preterite, or perhaps a habit you've had since you were young, using the imperfect, or even what you'll be doing next summer, using the future! This type of tense work not only makes your written work more impressive and sophisticated, but it also makes it a lot more interesting for the reader.

Me llamo Ana, tengo 15 años. Tengo 3 hermanos pequeños, uno con 3 años menos que yo, otro con 5 años menos que yo y el ultimo de 6 años. Es muy dificil ser la mayor. Mis padres me mandan ayudarles en todo, hacer la cena, planchar y poner la lavadora.

What is the difference between the preterite and the imperfect tense?
