What is a connecting relative?

A connecting relative is a relative which relates back to a noun or concept in the previous sentence or passage. A relative pronoun is used, qui, quae, quod, and is found at the beginning of the sentence. However, do not translate it like a relative 'who' but as 'et isand he'.
