How can I ensure my essay is focussed and avoid 'waffling'?

The approach that I took throughout my GCSEs was P.E.E - point, evidence, explain. 1) Decide the point you are making and summarise this. 2) Find evidence to support your point in the text - your answer must be rooted in the text. 3) Explain - this is where you can fully develop and analyse the point you have made.
