How should I begin to structure my personal statement for Medicine?

Writing a personal statement can be a daunting prospect- especially when you're not sure how to start! My top tip for beginning the writing process fora personal statement geared towards medicine would be to make three lists. Firstly, make a list of the reasons that you want to go into medicine. This will be helpful when it comes to your interviews. Think about those moments in your work experience that you really enjoyed, and how they relate to wanting to pursue a career in a healthcare environment. Secondly, make a list of your achievements, both academic and extracurricular. This is your time to show off! Thirdly, make a list of the work experience you have undertaken, and the learning outcomes of that work experience. This is the most important part! Integrating your interest in the things you've seen with an honest reflection on the things you have learnt and the qualities you observed in healthcare professionals is the key to getting that interview. The last list should be a list of the things you would like to achieve through a career in medicine, and the research you have done into these things. If your research list is a little sparse, it's time to get researching! Your interview will be smooth sailing if you are well informed, and the ability to back up your aspirations and motivations with evidence is a fantastic skill that will guide you both through your interview and through medical school beyond it!
