The equation of a line is y=e(^2x)-9 and the line has points at (0,a) and (b,0). Find the values of a and b.

y=e2x-9. When x=0 y=a.a=e2(0)-9a=1-9=-8.
When x=b y=0.0=e2(b)-99=e2bln(9)=ln(e2b)ln(9)=2b(1/2)ln(9)=bln(9(1/2))=bb=ln3

Solve the equation sec^2 x+ 2tan x = 0, 0 ≤ x ≤ 2π. IB May 2017 Exam

sec^2 x+ 2tan x = 0
use the fact that sec^2 x= tan^2 x +1
tan^2 x + 2tan x + 1 =0
(tan x +1)^2 = 0 tan x = - 1
x=3π/4, x= 7π/4

Why is a pendulum with a bob of the same size but larger mass than another bob damped more lightly?

The heavier bob has more kinetic energy/potential energy/momentum for any given amplitude of the two pendulums due to its larger mass, as each of these three quantities depend linearly on mass. The dampin...
