Home Schooling

How an online tutor could have kick-started my life.

I grew up in the East End of London and as anyone else who grew up here will tell you, it is an experience like no other kid has had. My parents didn’t take school very seriously and left school very early with few qualifications, so home tuition was not high on their agenda. It wasn’t a problem in Primary School but things changed in Secondary School and I wonder sometimes how much easier life would have been to have a tutor to smooth out the whole process.

Let me tell you my story…

My first year of secondary school was great, but then my parents decided to move to Kent and I had to change schools. Bullying began when I started school and this made me start skipping lessons, so much so I begged my parents to leave. I wish I had a tutor because when I finally settled in to my new school, I realised I had missed a lot. I struggled with Algebra in Maths and I could barely balance chemicals in Science, my confidence plummeted. If I had a tutor, I wouldn’t have felt so left behind.

The dreaded GCSE year came and my parents moved again. This time there wasn’t any school places available and I was home tutored for a year. My parents put a book in front of me and said, “do it”. After a while, I gave up and became depressed. If I did have a tutor, then I would have had someone monitor my progress and keep me on track of the syllabus and encourage me. One thing I can say for my year at home was I learned how to make a darn good lasagne!

With the help of other family members, I managed to get on to a pre sixteen GCSE course at a local college and from there, things began to get better. My teachers gave me the guidance and confidence to learn. I had to take five GCSE’s in a year, it was tough but it would be just enough to be able to do A Levels. I just about scrapped 280 UCAS points to get into Goldsmiths College to study Sociology and Politics and now I am freelance writer.

My educational journey wasn’t easy but it could have been so much smoother with the help of a tutor. I only wish I had found MyTutor with its affordable prices when I needed it. With the help of an online tutor I could have got more GCSEs and could have gone over my lessons and achieved better grades. I would recommend tuition to everyone because having someone explain things in a different way can make all the difference between that B or an A.
