6 months ago, I found myself in a situation familiar to many parents: my son Ben was completely disengaged from his school work and I had run out of solutions.
In a recent meeting with his maths teacher I had been told that he wasn’t paying attention in lessons, and was at risk of completely failing his GCSE exam. Any attempt to discuss the issue with him was unproductive, as he insisted that he ‘just didn’t get’ maths and never would. Although Ben’s teachers clearly cared about his progress, it was hard for them to give him focused attention with 30 other students in their class.
A friend of mine recommended maths tutoring as a way to boost his confidence and his grades, but I could only find three tutors in our town and all of them charged what seemed like extortionate rates for an hour of teaching.
It was while I was trawling the internet for local tutors that I came across MyTutor, a website where all the tuition is done online using video chat software similar to Skype. Because the tutors wouldn’t have to travel, we could choose from thousands of tutors all over the country, and the rates were much cheaper.
I showed the site to Ben and let him choose a tutor for himself. He eventually settled on Nat, who is studying Maths at Bristol University and seemed energetic and friendly on his profile video.

We booked in some sessions and Ben was hooked immediately. He found it much more natural to have tutorials from his laptop in the comfort of his own room, and he seemed to relate to Nat in a way that he couldn’t with his teachers.
Nat explained tricky concepts to Ben at the right pace for him, and his confidence shot up almost straight away. After a few sessions, Ben started to genuinely enjoy maths and looked forward to his sessions every week.
We were over the moon when results day came around and Ben got a 7 in his maths GCSE! He’d jumped 4 grades in just 5 months which meant he was able to get into sixth form without any problems, but more importantly, he now actually wanted to go.
I would recommend MyTutor to any pupil needing extra confidence or a boost in understanding during GCSE or A Levels!
